Cultural Leadership
Principals will understand and act on the understanding of the important role a school’s culture plays in contributing to the exemplary performance of the school. Principals must support and value the traditions, artifacts, symbols and positive values and norms of the school and community that result in a sense of identity and pride upon which to build a positive future. A principal must be able to “re-culture” the school if needed to align with school’s goals of improving student and adult learning and to infuse the work of the adults and students with passion, meaning and purpose. Cultural leadership implies understanding the school and the people in it each day, how they came to their current state, and how to connect with their traditions in order to move them forward to support the school’s efforts to achieve individual and collective goals.

I created a survey to gain more knowledge on the culture of the school and to identify areas of improvement. I also asked for ways that I could help them as a school leader individually and the school as a whole. Once I received the feedback, I met with the leadership team and we discussed the areas where we could improve.

During staff meetings, I was in charge of getting the staff to share celebrations/good things that were going on in their classroom or personal lives. I would start off with an attention getter (that teachers could use in their classrooms) and end with a celebration cheer.

At the welcome back staff meeting; I had the opportunity to conduct the staff's icebreaker challenge. Staff members shared, they learned new things about each other as well as things they have in common. This will help staff members learn how to interact with one another.
